Mapquest have announced that their popular mapping website has now been fully optimized for iPhone visitors. iPhone users will be automatically detected when browsing mapquest.com and be shown an iPhone-optimized version of the website.

Mapquest for iPhone is also just as full-featured as its desktop sibling. iPhone users will be able to flick, swipe, and pinch their way through Mapquest’s Maps, Driving Directions, Local Search, Traffic, Recent Locations, and Cheapest Gas Prices.

Affected areas included Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Missour, with reports confirming that the problem affected all AT&T customers.

AT&T has since commented on the outage, informing customers that service has now been fully restored to all affected areas.

“There was a routing issue affecting some wireless data use in the Northeast region. AT&T technicians determined the cause and restored service at 11:56AM EDT. Voice calling, text messaging and BlackBerry e-mail were unaffected.”

Apple are due to hold an official event on September 9th, according to a number of invitations sent out to publishers. The event is scheduled to take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 a.m.

It is currently unknown what products or announcements will feature at the event, although the graphics on the invitation flyer suggest the event will feature the iPod. With many speculating on the release of a new iPod device along with an announcement for long awaited 2.1 software update and updated iPod touch.

This may all be due to change however, according to Touch Arcade the popular Apple accessory company Belkin are currently working on an unknown game controller for the iPhone device.

The advertisement above mentions using JoyPod specifically for the App Store games, leading us to believe that it will be supported by the SDK.

It also mentions:

• 8 buttons total (6 on the front)
• Audio output
• Dock connector for power and syncing

As you would imagine the prepaid iPhone service works out more expensive than the current contract plan, here’s the details:

• The 8GB iPhone 3G model will cost you £349.99 (approx $631) while the 16GB model will cost you £399.99 (approx $721).
• £10 and £14 ($18 to $25) each month will give you 500 bonus minutes of call time to any UK home phone or O2 cellphone.
• £15 and £29 ($27 to $52) each month will give you 1000 bonus minutes of call time to any UK home phone or O2 cellphone.
• £30 or more will give you unlimited calls to any UK home phone or O2 cellphone.
• Calls past the prepaid amount will cost 5p per minute.
• You also get unlimited Internet access within the UK (though an “excessive usage” policy still applies), including 3G and O2 Wi-Fi, for free for the first year of service but will cost £10 per month after the first year.
• Text messages aren’t included with the plan similar to the plans with a 2-year contract. A text message will cost 10p each inside the UK.
• The visual voicemail and call merging features will not be available through Pay & Go plan.
• You will also be able to switch tariffs. However, I don’t think you can move from an iPhone 3G with a contract to an iPhone 3G on Pay & Go tariff.

There have been reports of cracks appearing on both the black and white 3G models, although the cracks on the white models are obviously more visible.

Apple are honouring any complaints by offering replacement devices for the cracked iPhones.

The popular customization application is now available for the iPhone 2.0 software. Customize.app gives the iPhone user the ability to modify the appearance of their iPhone, along with custom themes and file sets.

The new iPhone 3G update also comes bundled with a theme browser that lets users preview the themes available before they start downloading and applying them.

Please note that Customize.app v2.0 does not work on iPhone 1.1.4 firmware or 1.1.5 firmware.

Customize.app 2.0 is available through Cydia, but you can download the specifc application here - a 2.0 Jailbreak is required.

Engadget have also rumored that the new version of the WebKit framework contains a reference to commands for “plugins,” “copy,” “paste,” “cut.” But whether this will be possible in 2.1 remains to be seen.

Also believed to be making it into the 2.1 update is Apple’s much talked about push notification service.

Firmware 2.1 is expected to be available to iPhone users in September.

The stores will now be open from Monday through to Saturday opening at 8am specifically for waiting iPhone 3G hopeful’s. There are also rumors circulating that Apple are also letting customers reserve a phone to pick up later in the day.

From the Apple availability page:

To accommodate demand for iPhone 3G, all Apple Retail Stores will now open at 8:00 a.m. every day but Sunday. We’re also adding staff to help you get up and running as quickly as possible.
