If you havent already heard, technology blog Engadget.com yesterday broke news of an iPhone / Safari delay.

It turned out however that the supposedly leaked Apple email they received as a news tip was bogus and Apple promptly set the record straight - again confirming there would be no such delay for either product.

Well in the 6 or so minute timeframe from publication to retraction Apple stock tanked on massive selling, going from $107.89 to $103.42 $4 billion off of Apple ’s market capitalization.

It's astonishing that one blog update can cause such a ripple effect. I do find it hard to believe that this is solely down to Engadget.

I think it's far more likely this fake email was passed around internally at Apple prompting a lot of supposedly inside trading.

You know i was following this story right as it broke on engadget, the fallout however was completely unexpected.

Im sure more info on the specifics of the 'leak' will come out over the coming days - expect some heads to roll if it did infact originate from the Apple servers - ouch!

New report from eWeek shows a statement from Apple denying that the email originated from an Apple source:

Quote:
Natalie Kerris, spokesperson for Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., contradicted this, telling eWEEK on May 17 that the e-mail "did not come from Apple."

Kerris also denied the claims made in the false e-mail. "The iPhone is scheduled to ship in June, as planned, and Leopard is also on track to ship in October," she said. Kerris added that developers can expect to see a full-featured developer release of Leopard at this June's WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), which will start June 11 in San Francisco.
It seems however that an SEC investigation could still be on the cards.
