Can anyone tell me if I have to do anything special for the first charge of the battery? For example, do I have to let it charge for so long, and then let it run down all the way till it is dead just for the first time.

I never bothered with mine just charge it normally, Apple added some battery tips to their website to help people preserve the life of their iPhone battery.
