When I purchased my 3G, I gave my first gen iphone to someone else in my family plan (consisting of 2 lines/phones). They upgraded from a crappy $10 plan with their current cheap phone to the first gen iPhone - but the rep at AT&T only added the iPhone data package. I was originally paying $50 + the iPhone data package for the first gen. Now, she's paying $10 + the data package. Did AT&T make a mistake? It's been going on like this for a year...this seemingly discounted price.

Why would she pay $40 less than I did when I had the phone? Is there some kind of discount tied in with the family plan?

If no mistake was made and she really is supposed to pay only $30 per month for her first gen iPhone vs my $80 per month for my 3G, can I give her my current 3G and have her still pay the same price she pays now? I'd like to pick up the 3GS and pass my 3G over, but not for an increased $40 per month. Sorry for any confusion - if someone can understand my situation, can they answer 1) if AT&T made a billing mistake and 2) if they didn't, what her new price would be with a 3G per month. I'd appreciate any knowledge on the subject.

I don't think they are making any mistake. The price is decreasing with time and for that the monthly payment is also decreasing. Though I can not tell you the new payment account because it is for AT&T to decide, But you can always ask them.

I agree with terrywills. As price is falling down monthly payment is also decreasing. AT&T did not make any mistake. She is just enjoying the offer fortunately.

On the AT&T family plan, the first phone is the primary phone. Each additional phone is only $10 and the phones share the minuters. It sounds like you have the primary phone and she has one of the additional phones. Her data package on a 2G is US$20 and the data on your 3G is US$30. The way we did the plan with 5 phones, which has 2 Iphones, is we take the data off, then split ti bill 5 ways with each person paying their part. I have a 3G and pay for my own data and a fith of the remainder of the voice plan. You may want to do it that way. Now, if you go to the 3GS, your charges will not change since the data package is the same for the 3G. If you give her your phone, her data will go up by US$10 since the 2G is US$10 cheaper.
