Connecting iPhone to exchange.

I've followed the steps as outlined below. I've tested RPC over HTTP, OWA, IMAP is enabled. I am not using SSL FOR NOW. Before you start to jump on my back, I'd like to get the darn thing working. However. With the settings properly enabled. When I attempt to connect the iPhone to the exchange server. I can see the request come in through the router, and get passed onto the exchange server, however the iPhone always says that the connection failed & the mail could not be retrieved.

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME! I no longer know what the problem is.

1 - Make sure that Outlook Web Access is enabled

2 - Also IMAP in exchange must be enabled too.

3 - also RPC over http must be enabled too.

Iphone does not need the Exchange Certificate in order to authenticate. This is a big advantage over the other phones like Blackberry,Treo., etc.

Now to the Phone

1 - press the mail icon

2 - press in Others

3 - select the exchange button

4 - Type you name and last name

5 - type your email address

6 - In the incoming server depending on how your outlook in your working area is setup
a- if you use outlook web access your must be exchange.domain.com
b - if not you must use the address used for rpc over http

** make sure not to use http or https this will cause an error in the iphone

7 - type your user name for you exchange account

8 - type your password

9 - At the smtp box you must use the exact name for your incoming server

10- leave the user and password blank

** IF a user name or password is typed in the smtp box the iphone would not connect to the exchange server

save it and your iphone is ready to receive emails from your workplace. This makes the Iphone a big competitor for the other phones since is a lot easier to configure

Have fun! and thanks for everything.

It wasn't that hard at all

another fix

Finally, finally got my first gen iphone to work properly with exchange for work email. I've tried most of the other solutions suggested by all these forum threads trying to address this issue. Hopefully, this will help some of you who have been frustrated by your iphone's inability to access work email! No server adjustments required!

My iphone exchange situation: calendar exchange worked, could send emails and see all my inbox folders but received "failed to connect to server" message when retrieving emails.
I have many folders in my email exchange inbox and many rules setup (e.g. if email from John Doe comes in move to John Doe folder).

First, I deleted my exchange account on the iphone so I could start from scratch. Then in Outlook, I had to move all emails from my inbox folder to another folder. I guess this somehow clears the pipes for the iphone/exchange communication to work.
Second, I recreated the exchange account on the iphone. Calendar sync worked like before. I sent a test email to myself using Outlook. Miraculously, the iphone retrieved it! In my previous 50 or so attempts this never worked.
But then I noticed when I tried to go into one of the folders where a rule was applied (e.g. move email to this folder if sent from John Doe) it would not retrieve email and I got the usual annoying "failed to connect to server" error message. I suspect you need to remove all rules created before setting up your iphone exchange account and then recreate the rules. So far, this has worked.

My co-workers (with 1st gen and 3g iphones) have applied these same steps with positive results. Hope this helps some of you who can't easily adjust your company's exchange server settings or can't get the IT folks to do it because they don't officially support the iphone. Enjoy!

Here is how I set up the iPhone:
mail--->other---IMAP. I did not choose exchange. I was following a document I found somewhere on the net.
Could this be my problem?

Secondly per iPhone tech support:
Inbound I use owa address: webmail.exchange.com
username and password
Outbound mail: att smtp

with this setup am able to receive but not able to reply to mydomain but can respond to all other domains.
Hi All,

There are a few of you having similar sending problems. I have just set my office iPhones up today and it was based loosely around jdej663390 post (Thanks for getting me started!!)

As stated in previous posts, OWA, IMAP (make sure the service is running)and RPC over http proxy (on the exchange server, control panel>add/remove pr...>Add/remove windows components>networking services, tick the RPC over http box and install this component.

Setting up the iPhone i found from looking at various forums and some of my own email knowledge worked like this:

The phone was not connected to the local lan it was on a different wireless network!

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Add Account...

once there select "Other" not Exchange!!

Input your name, mail address and windows password, click "save"

Next screen - keep it set to IMAP, on hostname I simply added in the public IP address (The address your MX records should point to) then again you windows usernema and password.

On the outgoing mail I wanted my mail to flow back through the exchange server, so again added the public IP address the same as the incoming and again your windows username and password.

The iPhone will now try to verify, this takes some time so be patient, then a message pops up saying "do you want to try setting it up with SSL?" click no and then save again.

you will now be in the screen that lists your email address, go into the one you have just set up, go to SMTP, Click on the server you have created (public ip one) click on the authentication button and select "NTLM"

This will now authenticate to your windows network when trying to send email, the next bit is very, very important as mail will never flow out from you phone until this setting has been done!!

On the Exchange server open Exchnage system manager.
Expand out servers, then expand you exchange server, the expand protocols, expand SMTP, right click on the "default SMTP server" and go to properties.
In here go to access, then relay untick, "allow all computers which successfully authenticat to relay" ... the click "Users" add the users in here with the iphones and grant them relay permission.

This allows the user to relay there SMTP mail from the iPhone to the exchange but does not open the relay, it os not good practice to have this relay open, your ISP will not apprecite it and may even stop your mail so please do not just open the relay.

Well folks that worked for me a treat email in and out no problem, I hope this helps you all as I know how frustrating these things can be at times!

No of these suggestions work. I had to change internal and external address. Since this has happen, I cannot connect any of the iPhones back to our exchange server

Hi all,

I've read your posts with great interest as I experience problems myself with connecting 1st gen. iPhone to my Exchange 2003 box.

Something bothers me as none of you (as far as I could see) let others know your iPhone software version and Exchange 2003 servicepack info.

I run a 1st gen. iPhone with software rev. 2.1.1 and my Exchange runs on a MS 2003 Standard Server SP3 and Exchange 2003 SP2.

I have all services mentioned configured and working but still I can't seem to connect. I run an SSL cert. from GoDaddy. Ports in firewall are opened so that shouldn't be a problem either.

The main problem for me is that my exchange is hosted (local server) on a single-level domain. This means that my OWA-address is: mydomain.com/owa and NOT owa.mydomain.com. Should that be an issue?

I connect to my RPC/HTTP via mydomain.com

Any insights and/or input would be greatly appreciated!

Excuse this question but does this synch the calander and the contacts also or does this only login for emails? If it does not synch the contacts and calander I take it that this can be combined with the Exchange Synch?
