Hi all. We have an exchange 2003 server that currently allows Cingular phones to retrieve email using ActiveSync to send/receive email.
How can I configure my iphone and Exchange server to allow the iphone to send/receive email via Exchange? Please help and be very specific. Thank you. |

First things first - The IPhone is 100% compatible with MS-Exchage Server, but there are some setting the exchange server needs in order to make it work.
1 - Make sure that Outlook Web Access is enabled 2 - Also IMAP in exchange must be enabled too. 3 - also RPC over http must be enabled too. Iphone does not need the Exchange Certificate in order to authenticate. This is a big advantage over the other phones like Blackberry,Treo., etc. Now to the Phone 1 - press the mail icon 2 - press in Others 3 - select the exchange button 4 - Type you name and last name 5 - type your email address 6 - In the incoming server depending on how your outlook in your working area is setup a- if you use outlook web access your must be exchange.domain.com b - if not you must use the address used for rpc over http ** make sure not to use http or https this will cause an error in the iphone 7 - type your user name for you exchange account 8 - type your password 9 - At the smtp box you must use the exact name for your incoming server 10- leave the user and password blank ** IF a user name or password is typed in the smtp box the iphone would not connect to the exchange server save it and your iphone is ready to receive emails from your workplace. This makes the Iphone a big competitor for the other phones since is a lot easier to configure Have fun! and thanks for everything. It wasn't that hard at all call me if you any problems 203-560-4072 |

Hello!
Thank you for the post. I have been trying to figure out whether to keep this phone or not and it really all comes down to it being able to use exchange properly. Can you tell me if IMAP has to be published to the outside world or just enable on the server. I use RPC of HTTP and it works fine on laptops. When I try to setup the iphone using your instructions it says the exchange server is not responding. I have IMAP enabled but not published to the outside. If it is using RPC over HTTP it should not need IMAP published right? |

Hello.
One of my managers couldn't wait for the answer to your question, so we opened the IMap (143) port on the router, and the "Not Responding" message went away, and all the emails are coming through to his iPhone. Just thought you would like to know. Dan. |

That would be the correct answer anyways. If you hadn't opened that port, he would have had to VPN'ed into the network every single time he wanted to get email.

Yeah I actually did the same thing. The only problem I have is that I dont have to open up that port for a Motorola Q to work. Also the Q syncs the sent mail and read mail as well as the calendar and contacts with your outlook over the air. I cannot believe the iphone is not setup to sync contacts and calendar over the air. This thing is $600. All i can say is I hope they come out with some sort of active sync in the next few days or I will have to take my iphone back. I really wanted this to work. Its a terrific device as far as usability goes but it seems like there are some key features that have not been implemented. If I go spend that much money on something it better be the latest and greatest(EDGE, no flash OR java support??!!).

All of the things there you listed are (at least it's generally accepted that they are) coming. I wouldn't be surprised to see Exchange support by the end of the month, and at least Flash soon.
I agree that maybe the phone is "unfinished" but as long as they don't charge me for updates, I'm good with them taking the time to get it right.

Kender thank you for your reply. I agree I dont mind waiting until they get it right. I just can't spend the money before its right. Its really ashame because this thing so soo sweet in pretty much all other aspects. I will keep checking and maybe when these issues are fixed I will buy another iphone again. But maybe then there will be a 2nd gen

I have followed all the steps above to configure the iphone to work with exchange 2003. When it connected, it only allowed incoming mail. Then it stopped working all together. It does not send or receive, it just tells me the exchange server does not respond, but exchange is working fine. Do any of you have further suggestions on solving this problem?
