Yikes! Looks like an out-of-warranty battery replacement will set you back $79 + $6.95.
Hopefully no iphone user is gonna need one for quite some time so hopefully the companies that offer ipod replacements for around half that will add the iphone to their range. http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/battery/ I guess this isnt included in the AppleCare package then.
