We took the iPhone to Europe last month and I was under the impression that as long as I didn't use the "phone" or Edge I wouldn't have any charges.
However, I got the bill and had $100 in excess charges (about half the trip was in this billing cycle). I imagined these were times when I lost the wifi connection and Edge took over on its own. I tried to shut it off each time that happened but apparently didn't do it quick enough. I called AT&T to contest the charges since I believed that I was on wifi the entire time and was told be the manager at customer service that there is a wifi charge when it's connected regardless. I'm not sure this is true (seems like my bill would be higher) but she said that any time you're making a connection with the phone (edge, wifi, whatever) they will bill you. They granted me 1/2 off the charges, which I still think is ridiculous, but wanted to make sure others were aware. I was very near cancelling AT&T after 3 years when the I saw Jobs' keynote on the iPhone last winter and have hung in ever since...too bad I'm locked into them with this $599 device now. To that note, is there a way to turn off Edge but still keep wifi enabled? I tried diligently but couldn't find it. |

No, if there's no wifi then EDGE automatically takes over. Keep bitching to them about it and threaten to cancel your service; they all cave eventually.

No, If you turn on "Airplane Mode" (could have come up with a better name don't you think) it turns off ALL wireless connections....

My trip crossed two billing periods and now I have the rest of it.
They did charge me for WiFi access - ($70 more dollars). Cheers to big business! |
