anyone who currently owns a pda or smartphone from cingular will know that they dont offer insurance for these products, and according to a cingular rep the iphone will be just the same!!

theiphone costs even more than their pdas so i cant see them offering the insurance plan for it.

will apple themselves offer somekind of protection or insurance plan?

Im not too familiar with Cingulars insurance policies but im sure they'll still be Apples 1 year warranty - ofcourse this wont guard against theft.

Past that Apple care would be the best bet.

We might see an iphone specific level of apple care, i mean just think how many people will abuse the 'accidental damage' cover

also be careful if you upgrade phones ay cingular. They will continue to bill for insurance covered by a phone even though that phone is not covered. To their credit however, after finding this out they honored the coverage evenb against their policy. Hope this helps

Im sure i read somewhere that Cingular have stated that all support for the iPhone device will be handled by Apple and that support for the service will be handled by Cingular.

I think Apple will offer a new level of apple care for the product but as of yet no specifics have been announced.

Anyone have any updates on insurance?

From what i've been told AT&T wont be offering any insurance options for the iphone due to fraud and i doubt any such applecare package will cover theft.

They are advising customers to use their home owners insurance policy which personally i think is ludicrous, looks like come friday there's gonna be a lot of people walking round with uninsured $600 iphone's on them.
