Hey all,
I'm planning on getting an iphone and replacing it with my current SIM, then jailbreaking it. I do NOT have the data plan, and do not plan on purchasing it. I know that I will not be able to use many of the features that are normally provided with the data plan. I have a few questions though:
1) If I restrict my use of the iPhone to making calls, texting, and some browsing (using local Wifi!), then will I be charged anything extra? I've heard that the iphone uses the internet for almost everything it does...
2) can I just walk in and pick up an iphone from the nearest apple store? or will they try to give me a contract or something with it...
3) I've heard that if my wifi gets disconnected, the iphone auto-connects to it's normal data-plan internet. Is there a way to prevent this so that I'm not charged tons?

Thanks!

I did some digging around and to answer your questions,

The only really definite way would be to remove the data PPU feature, preventing any data connections (and thus, data charges) from the phone.

Without the data plan from what i can tell your iPhone will be locked into EDGE and without the data plan you be billed .01 per KB.

WiFi will stop work fine but if the connection drops out i think it does auto connectto EDGE.

Hopefully someone will chime in with some more info.

Thanks for the reply!
I've also done some digging around, and apparently there's a program called Services that I can use to disable EDGE for good. That way, I'll be limited to wifi and it won't connect to EDGE otherwise.

update:
firmware 1.1.2 is having problems being jailbroken. The only way I know of is to downgrade to 1.1.1 and run something like jailbreakme.com's t.yiff file. the downgrading process was on hackint0sh forums, but they seem to have been down since yesterday. I know I need to use the 1.1.1 IWPS file, but afterwards I'm not sure what to do. The error 1025 or something is supposed to be normal, and I'm supposed to do a few more steps afterwards...
Does anyone have those steps?
