Apple Patent Safeguards Against Theft Of Portable Device
Originally filed in March 2004, Apple's latest awarded patent provides an anti-theft safeguard for notebooks, phones, and other portable electronics that offers protection simply by sensing the outside world.

In the filing Apple note that most thefts produce a harsh movement of a device, whether by a fast snatch or grabbing motion - this would also allow normal behaviour such as drops or vibrations to go unnoticed to the sensors.

The use of a hardware accelerometer and supporting software would help to monitor such movement forcing it to trigger an audio or video alarm. The device could even be locked entirely and would require a password to return to normal.

One element of the patent observes that software could tune the individual settings, selectively turning on the various warnings or softening the conditions if users trigger the alarm too frequently in everyday use.

There are no known current plans to adopt this technology just yet, but for many iPod and future iPhone owners this would offer a greater sense of security for the devices.

I love the concept, and it's good to see Apple looking into new avenues for personal theft protection but im just not convinced of the practicality of such a device.
