It appears that Apple’s two main issues stem from falling demand for the iPhone device along with loss from unlocked iPhone sales. According to Sacconaghi, the iPhone will make up 6% of Apple’s overall revenue in 2008 and projected as high as 35% by the year 2012. He also states that iPhone sales in December were up over 180,000 units per week, projecting a total of some 10,000,000 units sold by the end of this year. European iPhone sales however aren’t as optimistic with projections hitting 1.45 million units sold by March, 6.9 million for the September 2008 fiscal year and 7.9 million for calendar 2008. Sacconaghi, although confident Apple can pull these projections off with the introduction of a 3G model he notes that if Apple managed to sell 10 million iPhones this year but some 30% of the devices were unlocked, then the company would be losing out on $1.1 billion-$1.3 billion of revenue.
