This new technology labelled ‘Racetrack’ memory, according to IBM has the potential to pave the way for portable media devices to hold in excess of half a million songs, with battery charges not needed for weeks at a time. “The promise of racetrack memory - for example, the ability to carry massive amounts of information in your pocket - could unleash creativity leading to devices and applications that nobody has imagined yet,” said Stuart Parkin, who leads the team of research for IBM out at the company’s research centre in San Jose, Calif. IBM scientists believe they have only scratched the surface of this new technology and that we the consumer can expect to see the Racetrack technology starting to pop up in devices within the next ten years.
