I know I will probably get hammered for this but what is VPN for? It is some kind of system to allow companies to network their emails together for phones like blackberry does?

Don't even worry about it low23, I don't know what it means either so if and when you find out what it is and it's features hit me up and give the scoop.

Cheers,

VPN - Virtual Private Networking.

Here's an example from my own company - most are like this.

We have a fileserver here in our office for internal use. We have a private, non-routable IP addressing scheme, and we don't allow connections from the outside. What VPN allows you to do, is from outside our network, you have an encryped "tunnel" through our Firewall, and it's like you are on our local in-office network, instead of the Internet at large.

I have a VPN at home, which allows me to access my Mac from work in case I need a file ftp'ed somewhere, or some such. (Dear LORD do I want a nice VNC/Remote Desktop Client for iPhone!)

For more information - check out Wikipedia.

I'm slightly aroused by your explaination. I understood it to in it's entirety! So short an sweet yet very detailed. Thank you Kendra. You wouldn't happen to be holding private lessons or anything?

Hi Kender,

I apologize for my comment. It was out of line and charcter. I thought you were a girl. It's still no excuse for my behavior and my comment. Thank you for your knowledge and I hope to continue our friendship.

Cheers,
Superhero

VPN comes out of the box with the Iphone. This feature is already included with the phone. Also for you to receive emails from work you don't need a VPN connection. U only need RPC over HTTP enable in your exchange server or IMAP4. Also since the IPhone is 100% compatible with exchange (only took me 5 minutes to configure) you don't go thru all the hassle of crtificates, configurations that you go thru with the rest of the Smartphones or PDAS. The best way to explain the VPN is actually you can have access to everything at work from anywhere via a tunneling connection. Notonly access files butlike me I can reboot the servers, configure the servers, read my email using the computer at my desk from anywhere. Also it avoids the pain of carrying a laptop with you.

Superhero those are some of the things that VPN has to offer. Now the only thing we need is a good Remote Desktop Program that will allow a lot more than just connecting to the servers.

The VPN compatibility is there for a reason and I think that Apple to doa big move when start talking about the vpn capabilities the phone has to offer.
