Apple Insider are reporting that the next generation iPhone (the iPhone 3.1), will incorporate the Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip.
This new component upgrade adds support for advanced power saving features, along with support for 802.11n features that includes the ability to find and join 5GHz networks.
The new Broadcom chip also brings support for FM receiving and transmitting, which suggests that the iPhone 3.1 model may include the capability to stream music to a car stereo for example.
At present the iPhone 3G includes the Broadcom BCM4325 chip, which although includes an FM receiver, Apple decided to block its functionality. Currently only short-range FM transmission can be received - which isn't to say Apple won't do the same with the iPhone 3.1.
