According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple have ordered 100 million 1GB NAND Flash chips to be used in a new next-gen iPhone model expected in June.
Apple has reportedly placed orders for 100 million 8Gb NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics, which is likely to cause a supply shortage, according to sources at downstream suppliers. Nokia and Sony recently also began building their NAND flash inventories, further tightening supply, the sources added.
It is believed that Apple plan to recombine these chips in the manufacturing process to help create 16GB and 32GB storage capabilities for the new iPhone models.
The order placed by Apple is apparently twice as much as they placed last year that has led many to believe that Apple plan to offer larger capacity iPhone devices in early summer.
This could in effect mean that the long-rumored 32GB iPhone could see the light of day, along with perhaps a larger capacity 64GB iPod Touch.
