Apple Patent Suggests Smaller iPhone
A new Apple patent has been uncovered pointing the way to smaller sized iPhones and touch screen based iPods.

The patent hopes to resolve the problem of including touch-sensitive input on smaller screens where the user's hand would obscure the content. The solution described would include a touch-sensitive surface on the opposite side of the screen: users would direct a cursor on the main screen by gliding a finger along the back surface corresponding to the control, triggering actions by applying extra pressure.

Illustrations accompanying the patent detail the iPod's clickable scrollwheel alongside a keypad for phone calls or text entry suggesting its use for a future iPhone model.

The patent application was submitted just a few days before the Apple iPhone was officially announced (January 5th).

Patents aren't always a sure-fire thing that these features will emerge, they could just be earlu ideas or whatever.

But they are a good gauge of the direction apple plan to move in.
