Hacking the iPhone

October 25th, 2007

So I am sure that everyone is aware that the iPhone does have some issues as far as things like choosing a different network than AT&T, getting ringtones without paying Apple for them, and other such nonsense. I love the iPhone, I really do. However sometimes I wish that Steve Jobs wasn’t such a control freak. However I seriously doubt I will ever be able to change his personality, so in the end we all must turn to that underground group of supergeeks called hackers to really get the maximum out of our beloved iPhone.

The problem that searching for hacks causes however, is knowing which hacks actually work and which hacks don’t. Also how do I know if a hack is going to fry my phone? So I have taken it upon myself to try and compile a list of links that lead you oh dear reader to proven and safe hacking techniques that can allow you to use your iPhone, when, how and where you want.

I do want to make a brief disclaimer real quick. While I or someone I know has used one or more of these hacks I am listing, it is important to remember that I can not guarantee the safety of any of these actions. Remember the iPhone is a sensitive piece of technology that works best when left unmodified, however if you choose to try to use a hack, then be aware that the consequences can be very bad.

For Mac users try this

here is a decent set of directions for virginizing your iPhone

and this forum on the talk iPhone is good set of directions on downgrading your iPhone from version 1.1.1 to 1.0.2

While there are plenty more hacks out there, this is just the first in many hack related blogs. So if you have other hacks you think this blog should review or link to, feel free to let me know. Also if you have positive or negative experiences with any of these also let me know so I can post them under bad hacks.
