iPhone prices in Germany means big money for T-Mobile

October 30th, 2007

Most of us who keep track of iPhone new are probably very aware that the iPhone is about to launch in Europe, however I just found out some interesting information from Apple Insider that kind of makes me wonder about some stuff. First at least in Germany, the wireless carrier will not be AT&T like in the states, but rather will be carried by T-mobile. The other is that their costs and plans are a bit different then ours.

Why T-mobile instead of At&T? I really had to wonder the same thing until I figured out that right now they are the largest Wi-Fi provider in the world, so it kind of makes sense to go with the best established network. Also AT&T has a pretty lousy reputation over in Europe from what I understand. Just kind of rubs the sore spot of who we have to select as providers a little bit more though doesn’t it?

Their pricing versus ours is also a little bit of a miff to me as well. While the story I got this information from didn’t bother too I decided it might be helpful to show how their prices compare in US dollars.

The cheapest plan they have is called complete M and costs 49 Euros per month. This provides the customer with 100 minutes and 40 SMS messages. 49 Euros equals $70.75 which is over twenty dollars than AT&T’s cheapest offering to US users. However our base $59.99 plan gives us 450 minutes and 200 SMS messages. However in Germany they are only being charged .39 marks a minute which is equivalent to $.56 here in the us while we are being charged a paltry $.45 a minute in comparison.

Really I could go on to compare the other plans as well but all of them pretty much bend over the German consumer when compared to those of us in the U.S. So next time you think you got it bad come back to this blog and realize that others in the world may have it worse.
