iPhone SDK Will Make iTunes A Huge Mobile Software Store
February 15th, 2008
Due for release at the end of this month, Apple’s much talked about SDK promises to change the way we purchase software and applications on our cell phones.
It is widely believed that Apple will use the iTunes store as a primary hub for software distribution between developers and end users.
“I think a lot of developers simultaneously see this as the best thing and the worst thing in the world,” says Daniel Jalkut, developer of the blogging tool MarsEdit and other Mac applications.
“The feeling is: ‘Oh no, Apple is going to set up this stronghold where [developers] can’t set their own prices or have control,’” Jalkut says. “But personally, I think a lot of them trust Apple enough that they’d be willing to make that trade-off.”
With Apple offering the same easy-to-use purchasing techniques as their music and iPod game distributions, developers will have the ability to sell their creations for a set price. Understandably this has made many end users a little concerned, with many fearing the end of free third party applications.
