iPhone demand 2.0 #6: Instant Contact sharing

November 15th, 2007

So this demand may seem a bit weird. In fact I don’t know of anyone that currently has this type of feature available. However would it not be cool if say a friend of mine has a mutual friends phone number and I don’t?

Now lets say my first friend uses an iPhone. It would really rock if he could just send me the contact information from his contact page with the click of a button. I know there are some problems with this, what if most of my friends don’t use an iPhone? Well if iPhone developed an app that did this, they would be the first for sure, then others would follow. Not only that they could even make it something everyone could download and use (maybe even for a price).

So Apple get your engineers going and create some kind of instant contact sharing app please.

Charging with an onion

November 14th, 2007

Yes, that’s right, you can charge your iPhone with an onion (and some gatorade, too.)

This is an amazingly cool video that shows just how you can do this (the video uses an iPod, but it’ll work just fine with your iPhone)

Check out the video here.

Spotlight search on the iPhone?

November 14th, 2007

SpotlightI came across an interesting article at AppleInsider. It claims that the iPhone will have the Spotlight feature (easy to access search found in Apple’s Mac OS) in an upcoming firmware update in early 2008.

I think that’d be a nice feature to have. Easily find contacts, music, emails, etc. I would definitely use this if it does come out.

I’m looking forward to this (supposed) feature that will be coming soon.

Free unlocked iPhone offered by Canadian media site n49

November 14th, 2007

What do both my neighbor and Canada have in common? Neither has an iPhone, however as most people know Canada will soon be selling this popular phone and n49 wants to see it in Canadian hands sooner. How do they plan to do it? They are hosting a contest and awarding the winner a free unlocked 8GB iPhone. While they are reluctant to let anyone know how they are getting an unlocked iPhone, they did state that they are not buying it directly from Apple. Rather they are going to be getting the unlocked iPhone from a “local Merchant”.

So if you want to take a crack at winning the iPhone take a quick look at the rules of the contest and give it a shot. Good luck to you!

iPhone China?

November 14th, 2007

chineese-flag.png
From what I understand pre talks about talks about the iPhone going to China have started. While nothing is official (is it ever?), there appears to be some interest in the iPhone from China’s Unicom cell service provider.

With the worlds largest population this could be a great move for Apple, however they would face some very stiff competition as the Blackberry is used by a large portion of cell phone users in China. However we will probably all have to wait quite some time before finding out if an iPhone China marriage will actually ever happen.

2.0 demand #7: Give me my .wmv

November 14th, 2007

So a friend sent me an eamil yesterday with a really cute movie of his youngest child walking.  I was happy to get the email, he has been my friend for most of my life and he and I have shared all the major moments of our lives.  However when I went to open the movie it wouldn’t play.  Slightly consternated I tried it again getting the same error message.  Then it dawned on me, my friend had sent me the movie in .wmv.  While this wasn’t a huge problem (after all I could still open the movie at home after I forwarded it to myself (another slightly annoying feature) it was still a pain to have to wait, to have to email it back and then to argue with my oldest daughter about how I paid for both the computer and internet she was hogging and that yes Daddy was going to use the computer even if she was texting her BFF!

So okay Apple help a father and friend out, along with all the other poor shmucks out there running windows.  Make the iPhone able to open .WMV files Please!!

Unlocked iPhones on eBay

November 13th, 2007

The prices are crazy high! I am so confused on why this is. Reaching up to $600, new unlocked phones are the norm on eBay.

Why do so many people want to use an iPhone on another network (generally speaking, in the US, T-Mobile)? AT&T is just fine.

Sellers even explain how the iPhone that is being sold is “hacked, and the warranty is voided”. How does that appeal to one?

eBay iconWe’ll probably see less and less of these unlocked iPhone sales, as Apple is cracking down on limiting the number of iPhones purchased.

But until then, these foolish purchases will still be made.

Wallpapers for your iPhone

November 13th, 2007

Sure, the default iPhone wallpapers are nice. But want something new and exciting?

There are many sites available to this, just Google “iPhone wallpaper”. Many of these are not the best, and littered with ads. Here are a couple of the ones I found to be the best:

  • Deviant Art- a simple search will do. It’s a bit hard to filter the actual wallpapers, but you can find many great ones
  • InterfaceLift- there are some nice nature wallpapers here. Just download the “iPhone” size when you choose one you like.

Now, you can have a beautiful picture whenever you “slide unlock” your iPhone.

The Hack war continues?

November 13th, 2007

So just yesterday we reported that version 1.1.2 had officially been jailbroke, however also yesterday Apple released a image buffer overflow patch that will lock out jailbreak apps.  I wonder though if this was intended to frustrate hackers or if it was a serious attempt by apple to fix a problem with the newest firmware.  After all this download is only available as an itunes download and can only be found at the itunes site.  Also it appears to only affect 1.1.1 versions and earlier.  I would love to hear from the readers on this one.  Tell me if I got the wrong information or what.

iPhone flop or not in Europe?

November 13th, 2007

So now that the iPhone has released in Europe with a great deal of fan fare and hype, was it actually that big a thing?  Remember that in the US some 200,000 units of the iPhone were sold in the first week of its release.  However reports coming back from both T-Mobile and 02 are much less robust with both claiming around 10k units sold in the first twenty four hours.  However does this mean that the iPhone was a total flop?

Well I guess that depends on what you mean by flop.  If anyone actually expected to see sales figures anywhere close to those in the US I think that you would have to say it was.  Yet when looking at Europe as being a much different market than the US (I know hard to believe but while we all share similar DNA we are totally different cultures) these figures are actually about what I expected.  So in all honestly I think the iPhone did well for itself over in Europe and expect to see sales figures stay fairly solid over there.
