iPhone 2.0 To Support Saving Of Web Images

April 14th, 2008

iphone.jpgIt seems recently that a day doesn’t go by without another new iPhone 2.0 feature getting revealed. Today’s new addition is the ability to save web images straight from Safari into the Photo Album.

By simply holding your finger against the image you want to save a popup dialog box will appear presenting options to save the image. Once saved, the images can be used as background images, mailed to friends, or used as custom contact icons.

New IBM Technology Could Increase iPhone Storage/Battery Life 10x

April 14th, 2008

ibm-racetrack-technology.jpgIt is being reported that IBM are currently working on some technology that has the possibility of increasing the iPhone and iPof Touch storage capacity/battery life by upto 10 times.

This new technology labelled ‘Racetrack’ memory, according to IBM has the potential to pave the way for portable media devices to hold in excess of half a million songs, with battery charges not needed for weeks at a time.

“The promise of racetrack memory - for example, the ability to carry massive amounts of information in your pocket - could unleash creativity leading to devices and applications that nobody has imagined yet,” said Stuart Parkin, who leads the team of research for IBM out at the company’s research centre in San Jose, Calif.

IBM scientists believe they have only scratched the surface of this new technology and that we the consumer can expect to see the Racetrack technology starting to pop up in devices within the next ten years.

Nike+ Making It’s Way To iPhone And iPod Touch

April 11th, 2008

nike-iphone-support.jpg

According to a report by Stuff.tv, Apple are currently planning on bringing the Nike+ training system to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Nike+ system was originally created for the iPod nano, using a small sensor placed in your shoe, the device would recordthe distance and length or your run and also act as a timer and pedometer to log your personal workout stats.

n addition to these features, Stuff.tv reports that the new Nike+ system will also take advantage of the iPhone’s Wi-Fi capability giving the user the ability to transmit their workout stats to Nike’s online database - where a Coach system will help to improve their workouts and training.

Apple Implementing GPS In iPhone 2.0?

April 11th, 2008

iphone.jpgA reader over at MacNN has found what could be conclusive proof that Apple plan to integrate GPS support into the iPhone 2.0 OS.

Hidden away in the notes section of the Apple Developer Site is a reference to altitude measurements, measurements that are currently impossible on the current cellular based location technology. The note fails to mention anything else regarding the ‘verticalAccuracy’ variable other than noting that it can be a positive or negative value, measured in meters, and that it is available in iPhone OS 2.0 or later.

iPhone OS 2.0 Supports Embedded YouTube Movies

April 11th, 2008

iphone-embedded-youtube.jpgThanks a new Mobile Safari YouTube plugin, users running the iPhone operating system 2.0 will see their browser play embedded YouTube content on the page, also allowing users to click-through and view the video in the dedicated YouTube application.

The YouTube content has to have been encoded in the H.264 format required for playback on the iPhone for this method to work however.

Apple Releases SDK Beta 3 - Older Phones Disabled

April 9th, 2008

iphone.jpgApple have announced the latest beta release of their iPhone SDk, build 9M2158a beta 3.

It’s still not clear exactly what’s included in this latest beta release although the official Apple notes state that the SDK update “fixes bugs and adds support for the latest iPhone OS.”

Many iPhone developers are also reporting that their phones running (legally) the pre-release 2.0 beta software have been remotely disabled by Apple forcing them to upgrade to the new build of the OS (5A24od) in order to regain full functionality of the device.

Apple’s documentation states:

“Once you install the pre-release iPhone OS on your device, such device may only be used for development and testing purposes until the final (GM) version of the iPhone OS is released. In addition, you will need to install new versions of the software from time to time throughout the beta period. Failure to install the most current version will, after a period of time, put your device in a deactivated state.”

AT&T CEO: 3G iPhone Due “In Months”

April 3rd, 2008

att-unlimited-plan.jpgAT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega told reporters at a CTIA luncheon yesterday that he expected 3G compatibility from all of their smart integrated devices to launch within the next couple of months.

Vega was further questioned by PC Mag reporter Sascha Segan to clarify if the Apple iPhone would be one of those devices, here’s his response:

“Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough”
