iPhone 2.0 Demand #12:GPS Please!

November 5th, 2007

If you are anything like me, you on occasion actually have no clue where you are going.  Sure your buddy gave you directions, but after you took the right at the big red house you can’t find the blue mailbox to save your life.  Then it dawns on you that there was a big red house on the corner of every other streets too.  It would be great to have GPS at a times like this.   I know that GPS is  in cars, however I don’t always use my car.  I also  am aware that there are a couple of map services online  as well.  But often these little things are  frustrating to use and don’t always  give the most accurate results.

I don’t know how realistic it would be for Apple to put it in the 2.0 but I would really dig it that is for sure.  Then I could have faith that I could find anywhere with a friendly electronic voice guiding my every step.  So Apple help me out a bit and include GPS!

A quick look at Facebook on the iPhone

November 4th, 2007

Facebook has undoubtedly becoming an overwhelmingly popular social networking website. A couple of months ago, Facebook released a special interface for iPhone and iPod touch users. I got a chance to cFacebook iPhoneheck it out, and here are my thoughts:

When first arriving, most things are familiar. A long list of news (status updates, new friend establishments, etc.) is shown. From there, you can navigate to your profile, friends, or your message inbox. Also, there is a special area just for updating your status. It’s great to easily keep your up to date when you’re on the go.

For the most part, you are able to do the things you can do on the regular site. One of the main things missing is that you cannot comment on a photo or view photo comments. I’m not sure why this wasn’t added to the iPhone interface.

For the things you can do: post/view wall posts, view basic profile information, look at posted pictures– everything you’d need to do on a social networking site.

Overall, Facebook did a nice job making their site iPhone optimized; it looks great. So if you’re a Facebook junkie and have an iPhone, give it a try– point your iPhone Safari browser to http://iphone.facebook.com.

Best uses for a fried iPhone

November 4th, 2007

It’s a Sunday afternoon as I write this and I am feeling slightly whimsical.  So I figured why not write something a little on the light side?  Well after giving it some thought, I figured why not write about what to do with your iPhone if you happened to have completely fried the thing.

Use it as a ornamental paper weight:  One of the cool things about owning an iPhone is that you can show it off to your friends.  So if it gets fried, why not continue to show it off by using it as a paper weight?  Then people will know that not only were you cool enough to own an iPhone, you are also a fan of avant garde art movements.

Use it to even out a wiggly table:  I hate nothing more than going to a restaurant and having a table that won’t stand still.  However now I have an answer.  Simply slide the fried iPhone under one of the legs and the table is sure to stay still.

Enter into the world stone skipping tournament:  Okay so I know that technically the iPhone is not made out of rocks, but really the thing is perfectly shaped for skipping across water.  Not only that but is there a better way to impress someone with your lack of concern for material things?

Use it as an emergency reflective device:  We have all heard stories of someone signaling to rescue craft with a shiny object of some sort of another.  The fried iPhone would be perfect for this.  I mean damn the thing damn near blinds you when it catches the light.  I know that replacing the fried iPhone and using a working one to call someone would probably work better, but hey lets not get ahead of ourselves now.

File down the edges a bit and use it as a weapon: Got a neighbor who annoys you?  Or are you an avid hunter?  No problem, simply file down a couple of the edges of the iPhone and now you have a totally serviceable weapon.  If you want to go real hard core just use the thing as it is put your arm back and let it fly.  I am sure it can injure any number of things.

Use it for a wallet:  So I am kind of stretching now so this will be the last one, but seriously take your iPhone apart, empty out the insides, cut a slit in the side and now you have a wallet.

Hope you enjoyed those, or at least got a giggle or two.  See you tomorrow.

1.1.2 firmware is coming soon…

November 4th, 2007

…only to block the jailbreak hack (TIFF exploit). UK iPhones will have this new software pre-installed when it arrives on Friday. So, it seems new iPhone owners in the UK will have to downgrade their software if they want to do some real hacking.

This just adds on to the cat-and-mouse game Apple has been playing against with iPhone hackers lately, with the hackers mostly winning. No matter how hard Apple tries to patch something, the hackers respond with a new way to jailbreak. I’m getting tired of it.

This will hopefully come to an end when Apple finally releases a developer’s kit for making true iPhone applications.

Want to save text message chats? Use Syphone

November 3rd, 2007

Syphone is a Mac application, currently in beta, that archives every text message received and sent. This task is accomplished by extracting all of the information from iPhone backups made in iTunes.

This is great for people who would like to know that clearing the chat from their iPhone doesn’t mean they’re gone forever. Or, it could be used just go back and see what you said that one time.

Syphone sports an easy-to-use interface, and it looks just the way it is on your iPhone. It displays your contacts on the left, and the iChat-like conversation on the left.

Overall, Syphone would be the best way to go if you want to efficiently and easily store old text messages.

My issues on text messaging

November 3rd, 2007

Don’t get me wrong, texting on the iPhone is really cool. Apple did a really nice job making the Text application look nice. However, there are some things I have a problem with.

Random timestamps. This really gets to me. When texting, timestamps appear out of the blue. I want to know when text message was sent, not just “thirty minutes or so after that one at 11:30.”

Only allowed to text one person at a time. This is a common complaint. Come on, Apple, almost every single modern phone has the capability to text message a group of people at once! Why a fancy phone such as the iPhone wouldn’t have this simple feature stumps me.

No MMS. That’s Multimedia Messaging Service. Sure, I can take a picture of my dog and send it to an email address, but what if I wanted someone to immediately see it? Another one of those things that’s bogging my brain.

These features I mentioned could always be added in a future firmware update, let’s hope they’re included.

The “halo effect” of the iPhone

November 3rd, 2007

Apple LogoSo here’s what the halo effect is for those who don’t know it already: Windows user buys iPod, falls in love with it (and Apple), and gets a Mac. Apple’s ultimate plan. But now, it seems to be applying to iPhones also.

iPhone users see the amazing-ness, the incredibility (I could go on). They discover that this same company makes amazing computers. Did you hear that? That’s Steve Jobs saying, “cha-ching!”.

Whether intentional or not, more Mac sales can lead directly from the iPhone.

iPhone 2.0 demand #13: Design my own ringtones!

November 2nd, 2007

For me the expense of buying the iPhone was actually pretty high. To make this cost seem even greater, I am forced to use AT&T unless I want to use a hack, and AT&T has really crappy coverage in my area. Because of this crappy coverage my iPhone actually only works for me about three quarters of the time (only about half the time when I am actually home). To really rub all of this in, my wife works for AT&T as a customer service rep and my service still sucks! Now normally I am content to deal with the iPhone as I have too, and hope that some day AT&T improves their coverage in my area. However today I finally decided to buy some new ring tones because I was kind of tired of what the iPhone has to offer. Then it dawned on me, I didn’t like most of the ring tones available. I mean yeah they have a decent selection and yeah some of them are tunes I kinda dig, but most of em are not the type of thing I associate with my phone actually ringing.

So what I want is to make my own ring tone, one that I like, one that I don’t have to pay for! Is that really to much to ask? I already paid almost 400 bucks for the phone, I currently pay AT&T about 70 bucks a month for crappy service, is it really that much to ask to allow me to create a ring tone? Please?

Anyway enough whining, and please feel free to share your comments and thoughts, or if you happen to know a way to create a custom ring tone without having to pay for it that would also be great.

Seven days until European iPhone release

November 2nd, 2007

Just seven days and the iPhone will finally land across the Atlantic and bring with it all the joy and frustration of owning an iPhone. As part of this release Apple (United Kingdom) has unveiled a new page on its site full of videos and advertisements. Also there are the obligatory links to finding where to purchase the iPhone as well as several other lists that cover such items as accessories and other apple products.

I personally can’t wait for the iPhone invasion of Europe to begin in earnest as I believe that it will add even more user information, unique hacks, and of course more reasons to use the iPhone. Also it will be interesting to see if the iPhone is near as popular in Europe as it has become in the US. Just seven days (hrm kind of has a The Ring tone don’t it?) and we will all get to find out.

Time Magazine names iPhone “Invention of the Year”

November 1st, 2007

What an honour, I must say. Even though writer Lev Grossman starts out with some common complaints, he goes on to say five reasons the iPhone is so ground-breaking.

Grossman mentions something that is a great point: iPhone isn’t just a phone, it’s a whole platform. There’s more to come with so many new applications coming soon.

Apple sets new ground for mobile devices. Will it be the next iPod? We’ll have to wait and see.
