iPhone contact search and calendar hack

November 1st, 2007

One of the best things about the iPhone in my opinion is the ease of scrolling through the many contacts you build up. However I did notice that while quicker than the average cell phone, the process of scrolling through hundreds of contacts could become a bit tedious. Well this is no longer a problem according to this post over at iPhone hacks.

According to them iPhone hackers over at Polar Bear Farm have released a hack called “search” which allows you to enter a search term for a contact rather than scroll through all your contacts. From what I gather this is pretty easy to install if you use the installer app in the 1 click jailbreak hack I talked about here.

I think I am going to enjoy using this little app and suggest the rest of you use it as well. However as always be aware that changing any setting or software on your iPhone can have results that you don’t want, so think twice before using any hack no matter how many people tell you it is safe.

#14 of the Top 15 demands for iPhone 2.0

November 1st, 2007

Sorry I missed yesterdays post but I was sick and couldn’t do much but be sick. But don’t worry am recovered today and feeling much better.

So I have been thinking about what number 14 should be. There are many options out there and a lot of things I want to see, but what would be perfect for the number 14 slot?

While giving this some thought it dawned on me that the iPhone seems to be missing something almost every other cell phone in the world has. A flash for taking pictures, While this may seem an insignificant thing it isn’t. Without a flash it is really tough to get even a half way decent photo out of a cell phone unless the area is perfectly lit.

I also have to wonder why this wasn’t included already (or was it and I am just too dumb to find it?), either way it is most certainly something that needs to be included in future versions. As always feel free to discuss this over at the forums and let us hear your voice and opinion.

Thoughts on the iPhone SDK

October 31st, 2007

So many people know by now that Apple will finally release a kit so developers can make apps for the iPhone. My first reaction was, “Is this real?”. Apple was trying to stop hackers from making native applications, and now they’re welcoming them.

I also wondered why Apple didn’t do this earlier. Many were disappointed when it was announced that only web apps were able to run on the iPhone. After hackers made many native (non-web) apps, they showed the true potential of the iPhone.

Apple should have thought. They knew hackers were coming, so why not make this SDK available immediately? It’s too confusing. Now all of Apple’s previous efforts go to waste. Good going, Apple.

With the complaints aside, I am looking forward to see all of the unique applications developers will create once the SDK becomes available in February.

An easy to use Jailbreak hack for your iPhone

October 30th, 2007

People have been attempting to hack the iPhone for a variety of reasons ever since the thing came out. As is to be expected not only are hacks becoming easier to find, some hackers are making them easier to use. While doing my normal web prowling I found this interesting hack.

Supposedly all you need to do is go to Safari, read the directions to install AppSnap, and boom you are good to go. I have looked for any negatives about using this hack and so far it seems to be one of those real deal things. However how long this will last before someone turns this into a virus is anyone’s guess.

iPhone prices in Germany means big money for T-Mobile

October 30th, 2007

Most of us who keep track of iPhone new are probably very aware that the iPhone is about to launch in Europe, however I just found out some interesting information from Apple Insider that kind of makes me wonder about some stuff. First at least in Germany, the wireless carrier will not be AT&T like in the states, but rather will be carried by T-mobile. The other is that their costs and plans are a bit different then ours.

Why T-mobile instead of At&T? I really had to wonder the same thing until I figured out that right now they are the largest Wi-Fi provider in the world, so it kind of makes sense to go with the best established network. Also AT&T has a pretty lousy reputation over in Europe from what I understand. Just kind of rubs the sore spot of who we have to select as providers a little bit more though doesn’t it?

Their pricing versus ours is also a little bit of a miff to me as well. While the story I got this information from didn’t bother too I decided it might be helpful to show how their prices compare in US dollars.

The cheapest plan they have is called complete M and costs 49 Euros per month. This provides the customer with 100 minutes and 40 SMS messages. 49 Euros equals $70.75 which is over twenty dollars than AT&T’s cheapest offering to US users. However our base $59.99 plan gives us 450 minutes and 200 SMS messages. However in Germany they are only being charged .39 marks a minute which is equivalent to $.56 here in the us while we are being charged a paltry $.45 a minute in comparison.

Really I could go on to compare the other plans as well but all of them pretty much bend over the German consumer when compared to those of us in the U.S. So next time you think you got it bad come back to this blog and realize that others in the world may have it worse.

The top 15 demands for iPhone 2.0

October 30th, 2007

We all know that iPhone 2.0 is supposed to be coming out sooner or later and everyone seems to have some idea of what they want the update to include. I found this list over at macworld and figured it would make a good topic to put my own input into. I don’t feel a strong need to change this list a great deal, most of the stuff on it stuff I want to see as well. However there are a few differences here and there that I would like to see and felt they were worth some discussion.

I also do not plan to write about all 15 of these changes in one blog, the reason is because I want to keep my blogs short and quick, so you all can go about doing whatever else it is you do. So I will discuss one or two of them a day until I am done, and I also will rank them from the changes I find least important to the changes I find most important. Please feel free to give any feedback, make any criticism, and leave whatever comments you feel necessary.

#15 Cut and Paste: This one didn’t even make the cut over on Macworld, and I tell you, this is a function I use constantly on my home machine. I actually can’t believe that this isn’t already available on the iPhone, I mean how could you forget the cut and paste? Maybe its because it is something we use without even thinking about it, but whatever the reason APPLE PLEASE PUT A CUT AND PASTE FEATURE ON 2.0!!!!

well that is it for today on the top 15 for iPhone 2.0 but you can also discuss this subject in the talk iPhone forum

Macmost, a great place to find iPhone games

October 29th, 2007

Bored while waiting for the flight? Got some time before class begins and wish you had something to occupy your time? Grounded but your parents still don’t know you bought an iPhone?

Then maybe you should take a quick journey over to Macmost, while they are best known for stuff to do with the mac, they also have quite a bit of stuff for the iPhone as well.

One of the best things I found there is the game section. This is a section full of games specially formatted for use with the iPhone, and while most of them are pretty simple in the game play and graphics department, they are fun to play.

They offer great little games ranging from classics such as Minesweeper and solitaire, to those little mind games like sodoku and slider. While the graphics won’t stun or amaze you they are great for passing a few minutes or even an hour or two when there is little better to do. you can hook with these games here.

iPhone accessories: The kickstand case

October 29th, 2007

I am really generally one of those guys who likes to keep things simple, I really don’t buy into flashy things, thus I spend little of my time worrying about the accessories for my iPhone. However I found one today that I thought I would share with the rest of you. It is called the kickstand case, which basically acts as both a way to clip the phone to your belt and also the clip can be used as a kickstand so you can prop up your apple when it would be beneficial to have both hands available (say while you are writing a blog?).

This little device is going to save me a lot of time in the future and I can’t wait to start using it. I mean this thing is going to rock, I won’t have to spend useless moments trying to catch my iPhone as my fumbling hands try to hold it and write at the same time. There won’t be anymore trying to fit the rather bulky iPhone into pockets that are just too small. Most of all it gives me a way to proudly display the fact I have an iPhone because it will be in plain view on my belt.

If anyone knows who actually invented this thing please let me know I want to send them a thank you letter.

Thincloud, Twitter for the iPhone

October 28th, 2007

So you want to use twitter on your iPhone? Well now you can with the Thincloud iPhone app. This little application comes from twitter and so you need to already have a twitter account which you can sign up for here.

While I am not entirely sold on how cool twitter is, I do know a lot of people use it and like it. However after reading the information available about the Thincloud, I may start using it after all.

According to the information, Thincloud is designed for ease of use with huge buttons and an easy to use graphical interface. So if calling your friends, or perhaps sending them a text message, or even using your email is just not quite what you need with your social networking, check out the thincloud app today.

After all even I am thinking about using it, and I have previously not really liked twitter. Another point to look at here is that thincloud is an Apple staff pick, so we know they like it as well.

iPhone news tidbits

October 28th, 2007

There are always lots of short news stories out there about the iPhone, so in an effort to save you time in surfing the great wide web I am going to scour the web for you myself and post the more interesting things I find here. Enjoy.

Revirginizing your iPhone:

If you are roughly one of the 250,00 + iPhone users who unlocked your iPhone and then got pwnd by the release of 1.1.1 then there is good news the geniuses over at google code have released a reverginizing tool that should enable your iPhone to once again work with the new software update.

You can find this nice little tool here

Your cash no good at Apple Stores?:

Okay I really understand that both Apple and AT&T have a lot invested into the iPhone, however according to this story, customers going to an Apple store are no longer able to pay in cash.

This is kind of one of those times I really have to wonder if the world has indeed gone insane. I mean other than perhaps protecting themselves against someone paying with fake money, what do they really hope to accomplish with this particular practice? I have gathered that part of their justification is the attempt to control the amount of iPhones per customer and insisting on using a credit card can allow that to be tracked. Yet isn’t this just going a little to far?
