The iPhone is huge, in fact I am not sure if huge really describes the immensity of the iPhone and its impact in popular culture. Can’t say I am all that surprised really, after all the iPhone is probably one of the coolest things to come out in my lifetime. But as happens with all things that gain a great degree of visibility to the public, the iPhone is surrounded by rumors and myths. Normally I am happy to let people believe as they want, however I figured I would let that go this time and correct some of the alarming rumors I have heard about the iPhone. So without further ado I give you the Top 10 Myths about the iPhone!
Myth number 10: Bill Gates owns iPhone. I am not kidding I actually heard someone say this at a party the other night. I mean I shouldn’t be surprised, after all ask a random person off the street to name our current president and they are just as likely to tell you Bill Gates as George W. Bush, however Bill Gates does not own iPhone.
Myth number 9: The iPhone is a laptop computer. Now I know that apple is perhaps best known for making computers, but when I heard someone say this I nearly gave myself a hernia from laughing so hard. You would think that with the word phone after the i that anyone would be able to figure this out. I did ask the person who said this if they meant that the iPhone was as good as a laptop computer, but he promptly ensured me that no the iPhone was the latest line in laptops from (your gonna love this) IBM, which coincidently leads into my next myth.
Myth number 8: the iPhone was made by IBM. Admitted when this was claimed by the same person who stated myth number 9 I really expected everyone around to let him know just how silly this idea was. Nope! Not what happened, actually two or three people actually supported this assertion. I did try to tell them they were wrong, as did a couple of other people, however even after showing them the apple logo on the phone they still remained unconvinced.
Myth number 7: In order to have a service plan with the iPhone you need to sign up for Vonage. While a silly statement I can actually kind of see the logic of this one I suppose. After all Apple is known for being a computer maker and you need an internet connection for Voage’s VOIP system, but still I thought that given the big deal everyone has made about the exclusivity of the iPhone and AT&T contract that this was fairly common knowledge. Turns out I was wrong.
Myth number 6: The iPhone is just an upgrade for the Blackberry phone. Now I have to admit, the iPhone is an upgrade too the Blackberry, but it is not an upgrade for the Blackberry. However hearing this still kind of has me a bit flabbergasted but I should be able to recover some time soon.
Myth number 5: The iPhone is just a larger memory iPod. At least with this one they got the same company, however it is one of those things you hear that leaves you making that funny face that makes people think that you are either in severe pain, or that you just ate something really sour.
Myth number 4: Al Gore invented the iPhone. Actually I havn’t ever heard this one but I wouldn’t be surprised if I were to hear someone say this, after all the guy did invent the internet didn’t he?
Myth number 3: Sony is suing apple for the intellectual property of the iPhone. I realize that Sony has a big reputation, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them eventually get into the cell phone market with a phone similar to the iPhone (perhaps it will be a PSP cell phone cross?), yet I really don’t think that Sony would actually sue Apple for something Apple invented. I could be wrong of course.
Myth number 2: Apple stole the iPhone from Napster. I still don’t know for sure how this one came about, but I swear I really did hear it in a coffee shop one morning. I guess that the public is still upset about the first Napster getting shut down or something, but really why on earth would Apple steal anything from them?
Myth number 1: The government is tracking everyone who buys an iPhone. Okay this one has me kind of in a bit of a conundrum. If the government wanted to track everyone who bought and iPhone, would they let that be known? Also why would buying an iPhone be in any way a real threat to national security?
So there you have it, the top 10 myths about the iPhone, I realize that some of them are kind of far out there, but I hope you got a kick out of them. Also if you find out that any of these myths are actually true, please let me know.
