iPhone Headed To New Zealand

March 29th, 2008

iphone.jpgTelecom New Zealand’s director of mobile operations, Martin Butler has suggested that an expansion to the Countries cellular network may pave the way for iPhone.

Butler believes it is a ‘good inference’ that Telecom New Zealand will bring over the iPhone. The company is currently building a new $300 million NZD ($241.2M US) GSM/EDGE network giving support for 850MHz frequency of the iPhone.

Due for commercial rollout in November the coverage is meant to reach some 97% of New Zealand’s population.

iPhone 3G June Release Prediction

March 28th, 2008

iphone.jpgBank of America analyst Scott Craig predicts Apple will launch their much awaited 3G enabled iPhone in June. AT&T have previously confirmed that they will be launching a 3G capable iPhone sometime in 2008 but have not specified an exact date for the release.

“Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone beginning in the month of June after a initial small build in May,” says Bank of America’s Scott Craig.

The analyst also estimates that production volume will hit around 3 million units in May followed by a further 8 million in Q3 of this year which would surpass Gartner’s previous estimates of 10 million.

iPhone SDK Build Update Includes iPhone OS 2.0 (Instead Of 1.2)

March 28th, 2008

iphone.jpgApple have released a new build of the iPhone Software Development Kit which is now available to developers. The new build includes an emulator that runs iPhone OS 2.0 build 5A225c (the previous build of the SDK included iPhone OS 1.2 build 5A147).

Other additions to the new build include much-awaited support for building iPhone user interfaces via the Xcode Interface Builder tool. The Xcode tool allows iPhone developers to graphically design elements using the drag-and-drop motion, and also the ability to then link these graphical controls to written source code.

iPhone OS 2.0 build 5A225c also includes a series of code handling changes which utilizes an updated version of WebKit (build 525.15) for page rendering in Safari.

It is expected that a new downloadable edition of iPhone OS 2.0 will be made available shortyl to members of the iPhone developer program

March 27th, 2008

iliberty-114-tool.jpgAs the iPhone hacking scene continues to evolve and grow, such unlocking and jailbreaking tools are becoming more and more polished and perfected, which is certainly the case with these two new tools.

George Zhu creator of iLibery and iPlus creator Aviegas have decided to pool their knowledge in order to create two new general hacking tools for the iPhone, iLiberty+ for Windows and iLibertyX for the Mac.

These all-purpose tools allow the user to jailbreak both the iPhone and iPod Touch and the ability to unlock the firmware right the way upto firmware 1.1.4 for all bootloaders.

Many users who used Ziphone have reported issues with EDGE/Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - iLiberty+ fixes these issue.

More information on these two new tools can be found at their homepage

Could iPhone Surpass The PSP And DS In Mobile Gaming?

March 26th, 2008

Business Week have compiled a comparison chart highlighting the contrasting differences between the Apple iPhone and leading mobile gaming handhelds, the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.

iphone_comparison.jpg

It’s clear from the start how much potential the iPhone has when compared to the leading handheld the Sony PSP. with over double the processing power of the PSP, the iPhone already has the user base and software groundwork it needs to really gain a foothold in the mobile gaming industry.

With the iPhone SDK it’s clear that Apple are certainly doing their best to encourage gaming development on the iPhone, with the sheer amount of time devoted to gaming at the recent iPhone SDK launch event being a testament to that.

iPhone OS 2.0 Expected To Leak Shortly

March 26th, 2008

iphone.jpgThe latest iPhone OS 1.2 (dubbed 2.0) is currently only available to accepted members of the official  iPhone development program, installation of the beta 1.2 OS is only possible via a a special signature from Apple.

However, it is rumoured that an undergroup group have discovered a method of bypassing this special digital signal and installing a modified edition of OS 1.2 through the use of a tool named “Pwnage”which is used to leverage an exploit found in the lower levels of the iPhone/iPod Touch bootloader.

The bootloader exploit will allow those devices to run unsigned code, allowing Pwnage to modify the iPhone OS 1.2 IPSW (installation file), pre-activating and pre-jailbreaking it.

Apple To Use OLED Displays In 3G iPhone’s?

March 26th, 2008

iphone.jpgGartner analyst Ken Dulaney claimed in a recent interview with iPod Observer that rumours in Asia suggest Apple are planning to include Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays in their upcoming 3G iPhone’s.

Dulaney suggests that Apple have recently ordered another 10 million iPhone’s but this time opting for models capable of operating on the 3G data network. In addition to 3G support, the new devices will also include OLED displays which provide significantly more power efficiency than the current backlit LCD displays used in all of Apple’s current products, as well as being much thinner.

Microsoft Contemplating Developing iPhone Applications

March 25th, 2008

microsoft.jpgIn a recent interview with Fortune, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Specialized Devices and Applications Group, Tom Gibbons, revealed that they are indeed considering the possibilities of developing applications for the iPhone:

“It’s really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone. To the extent that customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we’re actually in the process of trying to understand that now.”

Microsoft are currently still getting comfortable with the newly release iPhone Software Development Kit, with the article suggesting that Microsoft may be interested in developing an application through the voice recognition unit ‘TellMe’ which the software giant acquired back in 2007.

“If the SDK supports these things,” said general manager Mike McCue, “we’re absolutely going to get a version out there as soon as we can, get TellMe out there on the iPhone.”

Google’s API Now Supports iPhone SDK

March 21st, 2008

iphone.jpgGoogle have recently released an update GData Objective-C Client Library giving the iPhone SDK support for it’s Google Contacts Data and YouTube API’s.

This means that iPhone applications written in Objective-C will be able to make use of the features like uploading video to YouTube accounts or allowing direct access to editing their Google account contacts.

It seems that the new GData Objective-C Library is actually fully compatible with the iPhone SDK:

“Perhaps you want your iPhone software to send photos to a Picasa Web Albums account, or keep a journal of phone calls automatically in Blogger. Maybe your iPhone application accesses a database of information from a Google Spreadsheet or from Google Base. With the Google Data APIs Objective-C Client Library, creating software for these tasks is straightforward.”

“If you are writing iPhone software, just drag the “GData Sources” group folder from the GData project file into your iPhone project, and use the GData APIs as you would when writing a Mac application. ”

Apple iPhone Developer Acceptances Confirmed

March 20th, 2008

iphone_developers.jpgThere hasn’t been many reports of acceptance into the iPhone developer program since it’s announcement, with apple rejecting many of the applicants.

It seems that the first batch of acceptances has now gone through and in doing so has opened up some more details about the developer program.

  • The program is firewalled, so you’ll have to be authorized to get access to Apple’s documentation and support site.
  • Software can be put on a maximum of five iPhones using the authorised SDK, so there won’t be any way to distribute legit software other than through Apple.
  • Allegedly, the pre-release of the upcoming iPhone OS kills the device’s phone functionality, although this has yet to be confirmed for sure.

In terms of who gets accepted into the program there appears to have been a randomn cutoff point of entry, in which randomn users were then selected into the dev program.
