MySpace Developing Native iPhone Software?

March 5th, 2008

myspace-iphone-application.jpgAccording to a recent rumour from Electronista, MySpace are amoung the first groups to be developing native third-party iPhone software with the SDK.

The software is believed to built using a pre-release version of Apple’s SDK and has largely been considered a secondary priority at the company, which has only devoted a handful of staff to the project.

The application in development is rumoured to include an iPhone-native front end for the MySpace website. Whether it will support MySpace’s signature music and video services is unknown, but given the iPhone’s lack of a native Adobe Flash port for the handset it seems very unlikely.

A finished version is unlikely to be complete for Thurday’s iPhone SDK presentation.

Jobs Talks iPhone Flash, SDK and iPhone Applications

March 5th, 2008

steve-jobs-iphone.jpgDuring yesterdays Apple shareholder conference Steve Jobs touched on many subjects that were on the minds of iPhone owners, mainly the SDK, Flash support for the iPhone, and more.

Jobs said “You’ll see a lot of apps out there this summer,” referring to native applications born out of the iPhone software developers’ kit (SDK) due for further discussion at Thursday’s ‘Town Hall’ event.

It’s unclear whether Jobs believes it will take a few months for developers to ramp up application releases for the SDK or whether actually the SDK won’t be available to developers until later this summer. Hopefully all will be revealed on Thursday.

Jobs also touched on the possibility of Flash on iPhone noting that the full-blown version of Flash would perform poorly on the iPhone, whilst Flash Lite isn’t the spirit of the iPhone’s full internet experience. It’s unlikely we’ll see Adobe flash coming to iPhone anytime soon.

iPhone 3G ‘Critical’ To Apple’s iPhone Success

March 4th, 2008

iphone.jpgAccording to some analysts Apple are experiencing a slump in iPhone sales due to growing customer demand for the 3G model, many would-be iPhone consumers are simply ‘waiting it out’ for the 3G release.

Understandably this slowdown is a concern to Apple investors who are already anxious about current iPod sales fear Apple may fail to hit its ten million iPhone sale target for 2008.

RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky believes the impact of the 3G iPhone has been underestimated, adding that he hopes the 3G model will offer new features such as voice or video capture, real-time GPS, streaming video and more.

Abramsky said: “Apple is likely to offer a faster processor in the devices, along with more onboard memory, which will also increase speed, downloading/uploading rates and browsing experience.”

Woz ‘Disappointed’ With iPhone

March 3rd, 2008

iphone.jpgSteve Wozniak, Apple co-founder and general geek legend spoke at length about some of Apple’s most talked-about products during a recent press conference in Sydney, Australia.

Wozniak offered some constructive criticism regarding Apple’s products commenting specifically on his concerns for Apple TV’s 24-hour download limit for movie rentals, but that in general Apple TV was a “good indication of the future”.

Wozniak wasn’t as forgiving with the iPhone however, expressing his disappointment at the iPhone’s introduction due to lack of 3G technologies at launch, Wozniak went on to add:

“When we were in the air, we had a system in the United States on United Airlines flights… they had an analogue telephone jack that you could connect your laptop into and connect at a slow speed - 2400 baud - and I could do my email on it. But it was a hundredth the speed you were used to.

I always made it a point in my life to get my cellphone onto the internet, and it was a lot of work, and that’s what it’s like when you’re a pioneer. Experimenting constantly, updating settings as technology went from analogue to digital.

I carry multiple phones with me, some for one purpose, some for another purpose. I have normal slower phones, and I have 3G phones. And I find that when it comes to having a question like, “What year was Gerrie-Lee Lewis born”, before I hit enter on the Google search on a slower phone, I realise I’ll get the answer quicker on my 3G Razr.

Speed of mobile internet is so important to me. Now, United has cut its phone service out, so you have no more ability to connect to the internet in the air. I had to do other things like read books!

The same month, these other airlines like SAS dropped their satellite connections. The one time in my life I had satellite broadband on the plane, boy was that speedy and fast. Then they dropped it. But I hope it will be back - I hear Qantas is doing something.”

iPhone 1.1.4 Users Experiencing Battery Life Issues

March 3rd, 2008

iphone.jpgSeveral iPhone owners are reporting battery life issues after upgrading to the latest iPhone firmware 1.1.4.

Many users are experiencing shorter usage times reportedly around 10-15% less capacity in most cases. A cause for the battery drain is being put down to a supposed bug fix in 1.1.4 that affects how the iPhone behaves in fringe areas - areas with fluctuating signal strengths.

If you’re experiencing any battery related issues since making the upgrade to 1.1.4 be sure to drop us a message in the comments.

February 29th, 2008

iphone.jpgNotorious iPhone jailbreaker Zibri has today released the latest version of his iPhone jailbreak software ZiPhone 2.5. This new updated version will allow you to jailbreak the new iPhone firmware 1.1.4 released earlier this week.

It’s taken a little longer than most to get this new jailbreak software completed, with several other jailbreaking and unlocking options currently available for the 1.1.4 firmware, but im sure users of the previous ZiPhone versions (myself included) will be happy to see this release.

iPhone SDK Details, iTunes Hub, Apple Will Control Software Releases

February 29th, 2008

iphone.jpgAccording to several anonymous sources who contacted iLounge.com, it is reported that Apple are planning to use the March 6th conference to formally announce a “number of potentially controversial limitations on application development and publishing” in regards to the upcoming SDK.

It is believed these announced limitations will include that software distribution will only be possible through an iTunes ‘hub’ allowing Apple to act as the software gatekeeper giving them the ability to formally approve or deny any/all software releases:

While one source saw this as a positive for major developers, suggesting that Apple will be choked by application submissions and forced to give priority to releases from larger companies, another source disagreed, stating that Apple’s current approval processes for third-party products have resulted in lengthy, needless delays.

It is also suggested that there will be no accessory support, meaning that under current plans SDK developers will not have the ability to interface directly with dock-based accessories (GPS module, etc), though the iPhone’s own phone, Wi-Fi, and camera will be reportedly accessible.

iLounge also report that as previously rumored Apple will release an incomplete ‘beta’ SDK at the event (to selected media, analysts, and developers), with the full release kit now shiping in June to coincide with Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference event in San Francisco.

O2 Ireland Announced iPhone Release Friday 14th March - No Unlimited Data Plan

February 28th, 2008

iphone.jpgO2 Ireland have today announced the release of the iPhone on Friday March 14th. The 16GB model will be available at €499 with the 8GB version retailing at €399.

There will also be three different tariffs available on the network, €45, €65, and €100 per month although surprisingly O2 will NOT be offering an unlimited data plan service. There will instead be a 1GB monthly cap in place on data with any overage resulting in a charge of 2c per MB.

Earlier reports suggested a Summer time release for the iPhone in Ireland, but with the release date falling on St. Patrick’s day weekend it’ll be interesting to see how successful the launch will be.
