iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 Contains Ireland And Austria Network Codes

February 28th, 2008

iphone-internals-dissected.jpgIt looks like the iPhone may soon be making it’s way to Austria and Ireland after their country specific network codes were discovered buried in the new 1.1.4 firmware update.

As previously implied, T-Mobile will cover Austria with O2 being the network for Ireland.

T-mobile’s CEO Hamid Akhavan has previously stated that the iPhone will be coming to Austria by the summer. It may be that Ireland will receive the iPhone at the same time given this latest discovery.

Apple Announce An iPhone Software Development Event On March 6th

February 27th, 2008

iphone-sdk-event.jpgApple have announced their plans to host an ‘iPhone software development even” on March 6th. The event will take place as a “town hall” meeting in Cupertino, giving Apple the oppurtunity to discuss the state of the iPhone aswell as unveil details of “some exciting new enterprise features”.

It is believed that the iPhone’s software development kit (SDK) is infact finished and ready to go, the only thing holding back the release however is a reported series of legal hurdles and potential patent approval delays.

There’s no word as of yet whether the iPhone’s SDK will become available next Thursday at the event, but we’ve certainly got our fingers crossed.

iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 Boosts Signal Strength, Fixes Bluetooth And SMS

February 27th, 2008

iphone.jpgMany iPhone users who have upgraded to the latest iPhone firmware 1.1.4 are reporting numerous improvements in the cellphone signal strength, alongside a fix for out of order SMS texts and better Bluetooth compatability with other devices.

“I am getting 2-3 bars and solid edge in the Chicago Union Station north bound Tunnels. Normally would be no bars and EDGE would be sketchy. Leaving the tunnel I get instant signal. Before it would be 5-10 min before I got even bad connectivity. Loving it!”

“I used to have an intermittent weak signal in my condo. No more since 1.1.4.”

The issues with SMS and Bluetooth appear to stem from the 1.1.3 firmware where many users reported the bugs with the order of saved SMS messages along with quite serious issues with third-party Bluetooth devices - many rendered incompatible with the iPhone.

Although early indications suggest that these issues have now been resolved in the latest iPhone 1.1.4 firmware update.

Sony Unveil The ICF-ClipMK2 Clock Radio iPhone Dock

February 26th, 2008

iphone-sony-icf-clipmk2.jpgThis latest ‘made for iPhone’ dock from Sony is the ICF-ClipMK2 Clock Radio, and is currently one of the first iPhone compatible speaker clock radios to be unveiled.

Similar to other iPod speaker docks, Sony’s clock radio features a wireless remote which allows full access to the iPhone and iPod menu controls.

As you would expect the clock radio dock will also charge the docked Apple device.

The Sony ICF-ClipMK2 Clock Radio won’t hit the stores until May of this year so you’ve got a few months to wait, but once released the clock radio will be priced around $100 and will be available in white and blue models.

Will Apple Manage To Sell 10 Million iPhones In 2008?

February 26th, 2008

iphone-2008-projected-sales.jpgToni Sacconaghi, an analyst from Bernstein Research recently published a transcript from an Apple investor meeting in which the discussion revolved around iPhone unlocking and how to best deal with the issue.

It appears that Apple’s two main issues stem from falling demand for the iPhone device along with loss from unlocked iPhone sales.

According to Sacconaghi, the iPhone will make up 6% of Apple’s overall revenue in 2008 and projected as high as 35% by the year 2012.

He also states that iPhone sales in December were up over 180,000 units per week, projecting a total of some 10,000,000 units sold by the end of this year. European iPhone sales however aren’t as optimistic with projections hitting 1.45 million units sold by March, 6.9 million for the September 2008 fiscal year and 7.9 million for calendar 2008.

Sacconaghi, although confident Apple can pull these projections off with the introduction of a 3G model he notes that if Apple managed to sell 10 million iPhones this year but some 30% of the devices were unlocked, then the company would be losing out on $1.1 billion-$1.3 billion of revenue.

iPhone ‘Most Inspirational Gadget’

February 26th, 2008

When a group of South Korean CEOs where asked to pick the most inspirational gadgett from Time Magazine’s “Inventions of 2007″, guess what they chose?

Yup, the Apple iPhone (did the title give it away?). 55 CEOs (26.4%) out of the 590 asked picked the Apple device.

Best part however is that the poll was conducted by the Samsung Economic Research Institute, doh!

iPhone SDK Delayed Until March?

February 25th, 2008

iphone-uk.jpgRecent reports suggest that the iPhone SDK isn’t quite finished and may be delayed until March. Apple have said many times the SDK will be available from this month but with only 5 working days left of February it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise to learn of a possible delay.

A handful of Apple developers are continually testing the SDK and it could be possible that Apple have hit a few snags in terms of overall iPhone security with the SDK - afterall security was the main reason the iPhone was closed from launch.

Want To Learn How To Develop Native Applications For iPhone?

February 19th, 2008

iPhone hacker and developer, Jonathan Zdiarski has published a nice little code book entitled, “iPhone Open Application Development: Writing Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone“(*) should help to get you on your way to developing native applications for the Apple iPhone. With no definite date on the iPhone SDK this book could serve as a good platform if you’re looking to dive into creating applications in the near future.

Certain technologies bring out everyone’s hidden geek, and the iPhone did so instantly upon its release. Thousands of programmers want to provide applications on the iPhone, and this book shows you how to achieve the spectacular effects that made the device an immediate hit. You’ll learn how to use an open, community-developed toolkit that has been widely downloaded and used.

Author Jonathan Zdziarski, the developer of the first fully functional application using the open iPhone toolkit, now explains in clear language how to create applications using Objective-C and the iPhone API, which in some ways resembles Apple’s desktop API and in some ways strikes new ground. iPhone Open Application Development covers:

  • Installation of the toolkits
  • Background on the operating system and Objective-C
  • Detailed recipes and working examples for everyone’s favorite iPhone feature
  • Graphics and audio programming
  • The CoreImage and CoreSurfaces interfaces for games programming
  • Interfacing with iTunes
  • The use of sensors

Any programmer, using this book, can provide applications that impress users just as much as the official iPhone utilities.
