Tapulous, the maker of the genius Tap Tap Revenge iPhone/iPod Touch music game, has today announced that Tap Tap Revenge 3 will now be free for all users in celebration of the fact that the app has now exceeded 1 million songs sold in-game. At a time when record companies are feeling the pinch (and no, that’s not a touch-screen related pun), Tap Tap Revenge 3’s successful use of in-app commerce has proved a great way for music artists to generate new sales.
“The gaming industry has proven to be a valuable resource for digital music, and Tapulous is helping to lead the way,” said Eric Garland, CEO of the media measurement company BigChampagne. “Tap Tap Revenge 3 could prove to be the crowning achievement of music games on the iPhone, and I am not surprised by the great numbers it is doing, or the willingness of labels to get their music into the game.”
The series spent 32 days at number 1 in the App Store in 2009, and since the release of Tap Tap Revenge 3 the overall number of installs has passed the 20 million mark, with 600 million total games played. The franchise also includes special official single-artist editions featuring the likes of Lady Gaga, NIN and Coldplay, and looks set to keep expanding in 2010.
