Thoughts on iPhone unlocking

November 24th, 2007

Well, many know about the timeline of the iPhone unlocking.  There were initial unlocks, that looked like unlocking was going to be a lot. Then there was iPhoneSIMFree which offered to unlock your phone for a mere $99. A short time after this, one could easily unlock their own iPhone with the AnySIM software.

Then Apple came along. Steve Jobs made it clear that he did not like these unlocked phones.  Software 1.1.1 took unlocked iPhones and turned them in to an unusable piece of technology.

Now there is talk of unlocked iPhones available for an extremely high price tag over in Germany.

I understand why Apple doesn’t want you using your iPhone anywhere besides AT&T (that is, if you’re in the states). But, Apple shouldn’t have gone as far as it went.  Unlocking your phone is not illegal. Then why are they pushing it so much? Voiding your warranty? Nonsense.

If I bought a Motorola, Nokia, or any other “regular” phone today, and unlocked it, everyone would be fine about it. Does it void my warranty? No. Is everything alright? Yes!

The thing is: I have the right to go out and buy an iPhone, and unlock it. Apple, respect those rights! Don’t punish me for doing this legal task.

This was my proposed idea: offer only an unlocked iPhone. That’s right, only. Everyone would have been happy. Of course, it is too late for that now, but they can keep that in mind.

Apple just doesn’t get it. All these troubles: hacking, unlocking, etc. They dealt with them in the wrong way.
