Using normal headphones with the recessed jack
November 7th, 2007It is an extremely common complaint that the iPhone’s headphone jack is recessed, and only very thin plugs are only able to fit into it. I have heard from some that a normal port wouldn’t work, and I have also heard that they did it so you could only use Apple’s headphones (I doubt the latter).
This aside, many accessory companies quickly went and made an adapter which simply extends the port out an inch or two. They all do basically the same thing, with some extra, somewhat unnecessary features. So, it pretty much comes down to design.
My favorite of the bunch is Griffin’s. Its minimalistic, attractive design is great. While the $10 price tag is high (considering that it shouldn’t be required in the first place), it’s the only option if you want to use your favorite headphones.
