Voicemail troubles without data
November 17th, 2007This seems to be becoming a series. A series on life without an iPhone data plan. No, it’s not all that bad. It’s pretty cheap, too.
Well, today marks the day of my new billing cycle. And the first without Visual Voicemail. So, knowing this wouldn’t work, I tried to call voicemail like all other phones do. Somehow, my voicemail box was deleted.
A quick call to AT&T showed that this could be put back on in a few seconds; this was a relief. All was well when calling voicemail. However, I ran into a few problems.
There is no indication when someone leaves a voicemail. A bit odd, I suppose. Also, clicking on the voicemail button under the Phone app does not work. I tried a little workaround involving entering a code into the iPhone keypad, but no luck.
Please keep these points in mind if you are interested in removing your data plan.

This isn’t horribly surprising, and frankly should probably be expected. The thing is, Apple designed the iPhone with various features which included dependencies for those features to function.
There’s nothing whatsoever wrong with ‘bending’ the functionality to make it work more the way you want it to; but there’s typically a price. In the case of the iPhone, whenever we move outside the Apple proscribed model for use, the cost associated with that action seems to be some loss in functionality, varying in level.
